GERD would occur to a person when the stomach, lower esophageal sphincter (LES) gets weakened. While it is functioning properly, sphincter would allow water and food to pass by into stomach but would prevent highly acidic gastric things from splashing back and then coming into contact with esophagus. However, when muscle is found relaxed or weak, it would allow the stomach acid to flow down to esophagus. The condition of heartburn is quite a burning sensation which is usually experienced when refluxed acids would come in contact with lining of the esophagus lining.

The condition of heartburn and some other acid reflux symptoms are treated by using over the counter and prescription medications. The acid reflux drugs could be further divided into three – antacids, Proton pump inhibitors (PPI) and H2 blockers. The Antacids like Rolaids, Tums, Maalox and Mylanta are the drugs that are used for neutralizing the stomach acids by simply covering that wraps.  PPI like Prilosec, Wyeth’s Protonix and Nexium block the mechanism in stomach that releases the acids. The H2 blockers would help reducing production of the acids like Zantac 75, Pepcid and Axid AR. The dugs are mainly aimed for reduction of the stomach acid production in gastric systems.

Although these drugs can help relieving the pain for the short term cause, there are potential downsides of using the dugs in long run term.  These medications fail tackling underlying reflux problems and instead change chemical ingredients of refluxed gastric context.
